How To Make The Most Of Your Online Training Sessions
A Useful Guide For Apprentices Trying To Maximise Their Learning
Congratulations on starting your journey as an apprentice! This is an exciting opportunity which we hope will empower you, both personally and professionally.
To make the most of your time on your programme, it is worth considering the many ways in which you can maximise your apprenticeship training, both with your skills & development coach and in your off-the-job training. Given how many activities will take place online, we recommend considering both the benefits and potential issues which may arise from this during your apprenticeship journey.
Below, we will explore some of the ways we recommend which will ensure that all of your training time is maximised. We hope that these will assist you in your apprenticeship journey, and help you reach your dreams and aspirations from your time as an apprentice.
Before Your Online Sessions
- Test your technology to make sure you can access the internet and attend the session. This will prevent any last-minute panicking or problem-solving, and put you at ease before your training begins.
- Consider your surroundings. It is important that you sit comfortably and in a quiet environment where you can concentrate on your session and not be interrupted.
- Look at your background. Is it appropriate for a video call? Is it tidy and devoid of anything that could be distracting to others? This will allow everyone else involved in your training to deliver as well.
- We would always recommend turning up to your training session early, to iron out any issues and make sure you are ready to learn when the session itself starts. Please note if you are late and have technical difficulties, we will not be able to support you as it will disrupt other learners attending the session, who have arrived on time.
During Your Online Sessions
Why not say hello and introduce yourself when you have been admitted to the session? This punctuality will be noticed, and will set everyone in the right frame of mind for constructive and supportive training.
We also recommend putting your camera on. This allows you to be seen, and to interact easier with others. Using your camera also ensures we are inclusive for those who have hearing issues.
We recommend muting your microphone when you are not talking, as this will keep background noise to a minimum.
Remember to speak to the camera and not to the screen when you are talking.
Try to consider others when taking part in your training. If you want to ask a question, try to avoid speaking over others and wait for the right moment to contribute. This will allow everyone to speak and create a productive learning environment.
We recommend avoiding distractions on your computer by closing other applications, as well as limiting things around your desk. This will ensure that you can focus soully on your training, and maximise your learning opportunities.
