What Questions Should I Prepare For Ahead Of My Job Interview?

Interviews can be scary, so let's make them a little bit easier...

Congratulations, you have a job interview! It could be your very first step into your professional career. It could also be another stage along your chosen career journey. No matter what, however, you probably feel the same sense of dread as your interview approaches...

Preparing for interviews can be stressful. How will I come across? Am I good enough for this position? What crazy, out-of-the-box question will I be asked next? These sorts of thoughts are completely normal, and a sign that you are truly excited about landing your next dream job.

In truth, interview preparation can be made straightforward. Employers and line managers will want to know certain things about their candidates, and will usually explore similar topics. The exact questions may vary, but you can help make the best impression by considering how you will answer these questions in advance.

So, What Interview Questions Should I Prepare For?

Your interview will likely involve questions about the specific job role which you are applying for, so it is important that you take your time to familiarise yourself with the job requirements, relevant subjects, and the organisation you are hoping to join. Even if you are experienced in the job role, taking a bit of time to research and prepare is essential.

Beyond that, however, you will also likely be asked similar questions to these. How will you answer them when the time comes?

Why Do You Want This Position?

Perhaps the easiest question on this list, you must ask yourself what made you choose this opportunity. What excites you about it? Why does this position suit you and your skills? How do you think this position would impact you going forward? Speak from the heart, and show your passion for the role.

What Are Your Strengths?

You may find it strange to speak about yourself so bluntly, but it is important to highlight what you believe your own strengths are. When asked this question, consider what characteristics you have shown in the past which would greatly benefit your new workplace. What have people said about your strengths in the past? This is your chance to show what you can offer, so don't be afraid to be confident about your abilities.

What Are Your Weaknesses?

On the other hand, you may be asked about aspects of yourself which you consider to be weaknesses. It is important to remember that weaknesses are not permanent. You can learn and develop, and these activities can be a core part of your new position. Be honest in your assessment, but don't be hard on yourself.

TIP: Try to bring this question back to a positive aspect about yourself, to show your positive attitude and self-belief.

Tell Us About Yourself Outside Of Work

This is a question which many fear being asked. What sort of answer are they looking for?
The best way to handle this question is to be completely honest. What are your interests? What do you find yourself doing on evenings or weekends? What kind of music, movies, or activities do you enjoy? Think of a few hobbies and interests ahead of your interview which reflect who you are as a person.

How Do You Want To Develop During Your Time Here?

Every position brings an opportunity to learn and develop, both personally and professionally. When you think about the job role you are applying for, how do you think it will benefit your development most?
Your answer can help inform the employer about how they can best support you in your role, so it is important to think about this topic in advance.

Interesting, But What Questions Should I Ask During My Interview?

You have answered all the questions, and made a strong first impression with your preparation and honesty. But there is one final hurdle you must jump... What questions should you ask yourself during the interview?

Firstly, it is important for you to find the information that will need about this job, so that you can decide if it is a good fit for you. There are also some great questions you can ask to both make a good impression, and also find out a little more about how the employer will support you during your time there.

What Is The Working Culture Like?

This is an important question to ask for several reasons. Crucially, it will tell you about the sort of working environment which you can expect, and help you make a decision about if it aligns with your own needs. Are they welcoming, supportive, and team-players? You will want to take note of the words used to describe the working culture, as these will be useful to you in making your decision if offered the position.

What Is The Vision For The Organisation Over The Next Few Years?

No workplace or position will stay the same forever. It is natural that workplaces will change in some way, and you will want to get an idea of what the future will bring for your desired position. This can help you to consider if it aligns with your own ambitions and needs, and help you be prepared for industry and workplace changes from the outset.

What Opportunities Are There To Aid In My Training And Development?

Your employer should take a keen interest in your growth and development, and it is important for you to find out what opportunities will be available to you which will aid in these areas. Many workplaces offer apprenticeships or training courses to staff, as a way of upskilling the workplace and teaching new skills. Would these be options for you in your role? Do they offer any training days, or knowledge sharing activities?

You shouldn't be afraid to ask about your growth and support, as these will benefit not only yourself, but the workplace as a whole. If you would like to find out more about apprenticeships and how they can help to upskill new or existing staff, you can find out more on our website.
